Scripture Reading:
Then Moses answered, “But behold, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’” The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A staff.” (Exodus 4:1–2, ESV)
And Moses took his wife and his sons and set them on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the staff of God in his hand. (Exodus 4:20, ESV)
Devotional:
When Moses first stood before God at the burning bush, he was unsure, hesitant, and full of doubt. God asked him, “What is that in your hand?” (Exodus 4:2). It was just a shepherd’s staff—something ordinary, something he had always used in his daily life. It was "his staff". But when God got involved, it no longer was just "his staff" but it became the staff of God (Exodus 4:20), a symbol of God's divine power in Moses' life.
At first, Moses had to learn to trust God with that staff. He threw it down, and it became a serpent. He picked it up again, and it returned to a staff. With each act of obedience, he saw God work. He raised it over the Red Sea and watched the waters part. He struck the rock and saw water flow.
But as time went on, something shifted. The staff that had been simply Moses’ staff in Exodus 7:20, took on a new title. Why? Because Moses had come to possess the power of God in his own life, and what once was his was now God's. His strength was God's strength. He no longer just watched God work—he knew that God would work through him. Every miracle he had witnessed built his faith, and now, he carried the authority of God with confidence.
This is what God wants for us even today. The things we have seen Him do before should give us faith to believe that He will do them again. We aren’t meant to live off of past miracles as simply distant memories—we are meant to walk forward, knowing that the same God who gave us those past miracles, will move in our lives even now.
What have you seen God do in your life? What prayers has He answered? What miracles has He performed? Those moments are not just for the past; they are meant to build your faith for today. Just as Moses learned to carry the power of God in his life, we must walk in the confidence that the same God who delivered, healed, and provided for us before can and will do it again.
Prayer:
Lord, remind me of everything You have done in my life. Let the miracles I have seen give me faith to believe for even greater things today. Help me not just to remember Your power but to carry it with confidence, knowing that You are still working. Amen.
Reflection:
What is one miracle or answered prayer in your life that reminds you of God’s faithfulness?
How can you use what God has done before to strengthen your faith for what you need him to do now?
In what areas do you need to sure up your faith and confidence, so that you can fully trust that God will move again?
Thought for My Life:
Moses didn’t just hold a simple staff—he carried the power of God with him. And so can we. If God did it before, He will do it again. I can walk in faith today knowing that the God of yesterday is still the God of today…and his power does not change!
