A personal devotional from Part 3 of the sermon series “Modern Day Disciples” by Associate Pastor Tim Robertson, called Disciples are Different. You can watch the whole sermon on our Facebook page.
John 15:19 (KJV) - "If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you."
To be a disciple of Jesus is to live a life that is distinct and set apart from the world. Jesus clearly stated that His followers would not be embraced by the world but would instead face rejection because they belong to Him. Jesus establishes a clear contrast between belonging to the world and belonging to him. While the world operates on principles contrary to God’s ways, disciples are called to a higher standard—a life marked by a transformed mind, a lifestyle of holiness, and a desire to pursue obedience to Christ.
Disciples are not different simply for the sake of being different, but disciples are different because we have been selected for a divine purpose. 1 Peter 2:9 declares that we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation, called to proclaim the praises of God. Our new identity in Christ means that we no longer conform to worldly standards but are transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This transformation is both an inward and outward shift, affecting our values, priorities, and the way we interact with the world that we were once servants to.
The world does not need a church that mirrors its culture; it needs a church that displays the transformative power of God. When we fully embrace our role as true disciples, we become living testimonies of God’s goodness, influencing those around us by demonstrating to them the life-changing power of Jesus Christ.
Key Points
Disciples Have a Different Identity
Jesus transforms His followers into new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are no longer defined by our past, our failures, or the standards of the world, but by the righteousness of Christ. Instead, we take on a new nature that reflects Christ’s character, pursuing holiness and righteousness. Our old self, with its sinful desires and worldly mindset, is put to death when we choose to follow Jesus. As disciples, we should no longer seek validation from the world but from God, who has called us to be His own (Ephesians 4:22-24).
Disciples Do Not Conform
Paul warned against adopting the world’s culture (Romans 12:2). Instead of blending in, we are called to be transformed. Disciples are called to a higher standard than those of the world. Like Daniel in Babylon, we must purpose in our hearts not to defile ourselves with worldly influences (Daniel 1:8). Even when it is difficult or unpopular, we must hold firmly to God’s Word and live according to His principles. This requires renewing our minds daily through prayer, studying Scripture, and being led by the Holy Spirit.
Disciples Embrace Their Difference
Being different is not about standing out for the sake of being unique; it is about being set apart for God’s purpose. Jesus never conformed to the culture of His time but instead brought a kingdom culture that changed lives (John 18:36). His teachings challenged religious traditions, and His life exemplified righteousness in a world of corruption. As His followers, we must be willing to break away from worldly expectations and live boldly for Christ. This means standing for truth even when society promotes sin and self-gratificaiton. Disciples must live with conviction even when it costs us popularity or comfort. We must be bold in our faith and unashamed to live in contrast to the world, knowing that our reward is eternal.
Disciples Are Called to Influence, Not Be Influenced
The world needs a church that is fearless, powerful, and spirit-led. If we are no different from the world, how can we offer them transformation? Our lives should be a testimony that draws others to Christ. When people see joy, peace, and victory in our lives, they will recognize that we have something the world cannot give. We are called to be salt and light, and by being these, we are to be a church that makes a radical impact on the world and not a people that simply blend into it. This means choosing obedience to God over convenience, obeying truth over cultural trends, and walking in faith over fear. If we compromise and conform, we lose our ability to effectively witness to others. But when we remain steadfast for God, we become a powerful church, showing the world that true transformation is found in Jesus.
Personal Reflection Questions
In what areas of my life am I tempted to conform to the world rather than stand out as a disciple?
How does my identity in Christ shape the way I live daily?
Am I actively resisting cultural pressures that conflict with my faith?
How can I better reflect the power of God in my words, actions, and choices?
What does it mean to embrace being different for Christ in my personal and professional life?
Do I allow fear of rejection to silence my witness for Christ?
Do I allow myself to become burdened down with cares and things of the world, and allow these to limit my potential to have an impact for the Kingdom of God?
What steps can I take to deepen my commitment to living a set-apart life?
Thought for My Life
God has not called us to be average or ordinary—He has called us to be different. When we surrender fully to Him, He removes the limitations of the world and empowers us to walk in His purpose. Each of us has a God-given potential, but in order to see it fulfilled in our lives we must detach ourselves from the worldly constraints that keep us grounded. The old song says “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.” We must set our eyes on things of God and let the things of the world fade out of our lives. When we are focused on him, nothing else matters. True discipleship means breaking free from the world’s expectations and embracing the higher calling of God to live differently. Will you choose to live differently so that you can make a difference in your world?
